What Does a Genetic Test Reveal?
A genetic test provides insights into a person’s genome, helping to understand the unique traits our bodies carry. An individual’s genetic makeup remains largely unchanged throughout their lifetime. Understanding your genetic profile offers valuable information about both your body and mind, including the structure and function of your system. By gaining deeper knowledge of your genes, you can make more personalized wellness choices every day.
The Significant Impact of Genetics on Well-being
Good health is a combination of physical, mental, and social well-being, all of which are greatly influenced by genetics. Each of us is unique – only identical twins share the exact same genetic makeup. On a general level, research shows that our lifestyle choices account for 40% of our health, genes 30%, environment and social factors 20%, and healthcare (including treatments and medications) 10%. However, on an individual level, genetics can influence up to 70% of one’s well-being!
Each cell nucleus contains 23 pairs of chromosomes – half inherited from the mother and half from the father – totaling 46 chromosomes. These chromosomes are made of DNA and together form our genome. Our genome consists of approximately 20,000 genes, which contain instructions for producing proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of our cells and are responsible for all biochemical reactions in our body. Genes regulate the structure and function of our cells, tissues, and organs, while the DNA regions between genes control how genes are activated and function.
Analyzing Your Unique Genetic Makeup in an Easy-to-Understand Format
Approximately three million base pairs make each of us unique. Of these, around one million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are well understood today. Every individual is genetically unique, and this “unicorn-like” distinctiveness is largely due to point mutations in DNA. Most SNPs are neutral and do not affect the phenotype (observable traits) of a healthy individual. However, certain SNPs within specific genes have been scientifically linked to various bodily and mental functions, disease risks, and personalized medication effectiveness. Genetic tests analyze these variations (gene variants/SNPs).
Genetic interactions are highly complex, as genes can enhance or mitigate each other’s effects. Therefore, interpreting genetic test results requires deep expertise in genetics. Utilizing genomic data for individual well-being is only possible with precise and competent analysis. Our unique genome interpretation tool is designed to read over 700,000 SNPs and analyze them effectively.
